ArsDigita R.I.P.?

As one of the thousands who's downloaded and read Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing, forever said goodbye to static websites (at least in principle), and idolised ArsDigita, I was shocked to unexpectedly hear that they "called it quits" last Friday (via CMSwatch). Here it is in Slashdot. Interestingly, today's homepage doesn't show any hint of it.

But really, as I found out after a bit of googling, this is just the outcome of a story that started over a year ago. I found Philip Greenspun's version of the events (courtesy of archive.org) fascinating and sad.

After seeing that PG had to remove the above article from his site, and reading that even internet archive records can be deleted, I saved it to disk. Just in case.

This Diary of a Start-Up is fascinating, sad, and illuminating.
